Some interesting things to know about the Pickaxe before you begin:
1. Once you work up to an iron pickaxe, you can mine anything from cobblestone to diamonds - you don't need to upgrade your pickaxe further.
2. Enchantments work on any kind of pickaxe, not just the diamond and gold ones.
3. You do not need a top notch state of the art super awesome kick butt pickaxe to be the best miner in minecraft on your server or just in your world.
So, since you don't need to use diamonds to mine for other things, it is highly recommended that you keep using your iron to build pickaxes and save the precious minerals for another day. Obviously, you don't have that many resources to begin with, so why use up something you could be using to construct a sword, enchanter's table, jukebox, and etc.?
Since the pickaxe is so essential in mining, there are a few different enchantments you can place on it to make it a better tool in general (shown below)
- EFFICIENCY - you get a faster mining rate from the tool.
- SILK TOUCH - the blocks you mine will drop by themselves (they will assume the spinning cube on the ground position/state of being)
- UNBREAKING - each time you use a tool, the durability (green bar) may not decrease as fast as it normally would without this enchantment.
- FORTUNE - you get more items from a block than you normally would have (good for diamonds, redstone, lapis lazuli, glowstone, gold ore, iron ore, coal, flint, and many other blocks.)
With these enchantments you can get more bang for your buck and seriously score big down in the miner's domain. Happy minecrafting!
