What can you do when you have way more railing than you need and too many minecarts? Well, you can always build an increadibly awesome roller coaster, a mail system, a train, or just a town with a bunch of cars riding down the street to bring your village to life.
Roller coasters are best made with a big hill. Loopety loops are obviously not possible to make, so you just have to make an exception in the awesome scale. The first big drop has to be the one to really get you far, the one that makes you experience zero g's. You can add decorations that you may have seen at your favorite amusement park. You can even make one in the Nether!
A mail system is an idea from a friend of mine who had a small village and lived happily while in a server open to kids that tried to destroy everything. He proposed that you just build the railing to go where you need it to for transcontinental trips and then set a sign on the outside with the items inside of a storage cart. One person in charge of the system will then send it on it's way, making stops all along to ensure that everyone's prerequisites are met.
A train is the roller coaster with less steriods. In survival mode, this can be fun to make if you are tired of the same old song and dance, and can make getting from one base to the other quickly a whole lot easier. Plus, if you need to take some things with you, just throw on another minecart and you are done.
Cars - fun, deadly, and an integrated part of a lot of lifestyles in numerous countries; so, why not? The roads in your town you can design so that pressure rails keep the cars where the need to be at stop lights and the crossing pedestrians will need to watch out. A fully automated system of roads might be fun - and it makes hitch hiking a whole lot easier. Just hop into an empty minecart and ride around for a while, see how effective your system is, and make the necessary adjustments to increase it's potential.
All of these ideas are great, but there are many more out there that are even better if you have a lot of time and these don't satisfy you. You could be the first to successfully develop and Indiana Jones roller coaster, or reenactment, from Temple of Doom. Minecarts are fun, easily accessible and really great for ideas you have been wanting to lash out for a while. So give it a go!
