Statues and other artistic ideas have always been a major hobby to many minecrafters with too much spare time on their hands. One of the things you can do, is cultivate land to make it have the more desirable traits that nature in the world usually displays. By cultivate, I mean of course mowing the lawn to make it look nice, covering up the bare mountain side of rock, and maybe adding a lake or waterfall here and there, just to set things in motion a little more.
Usually, people with bigger projects who are planning on building a statue have to get a spot ready to go, and without the texture pack that allows you to start off on a clean slate, you really need to make sure the surrounding area is aesthetically pleasing to the eyes of harsh critics (if you are planning to share your work).
Sometimes, even when building villages, there are simple things that you can do to spruce up a gloomy and boring cave system. Add some TNT here and there, maybe some support beams, a couple of torches, some spider webs (if you have any), and a chest for all your belongings too valuable for a dangerous escapade. Who knows? Being organized might be your best way out of a cave system if you do get lost.
So mix it up a little. Make the place look nice for guests! Do something spontaneous. If you have nothing left to do and you like your world just the way it is, start in a new area miles away and start building a city inbetween the two points. Just do something! It won't hurt anything of yours if you expiriment farther away, so try it out.
